Our Lady and Sheen

Fascinating tidbits on Bishop Greco

I’ve been reading the memoirs of Bishop Charles P. Greco, who has long since gone on to his eternal reward.

He wrote the memoirs during the Second Vatican Council, at which Bishop Fulton Sheen would have been, as well.  Just a quick note, Bishop Greco, in addition to serving as Bishop of Alexandria, LA for 27 years.  He had built what seems like every church in this diocese, and according to the Bishop Greco Assembly in Marietta Georgia: 33 new parishes, 125 churches and chapels, 100 convents or rectories, 50 schools nd 7 health care facilities.

Additionally, Bishop Greco was the first supreme chaplain of the Knights of Columbus.  His Motto, “VIVAT JESUS,” became the motto of the order, and is still used in greeting today.

There are many stories still around of how Bishop Greco was the last bishop of the older era.  Additionally, he had a great love for children with mental retardation, and St. Mary’s Academy in Alexandria, LA is still a living testament to the work he did with those children.
