Saints and their Humor and a Pope Emeritus

Venerable Fulton Sheen in “Go To Heaven” points out reasons that His Holiness Benedict, Pope Emeritus, can retreat from the public eye. I heard people talking about how he could publish three more books, or whatever. I would like to hope that he takes on the role of Terese of the Little Flower, unleashing his prayer for the entire world. I am not an expert, but Venerable Sheen points to His Holiness’s saintly virtue in this passage:

Saints have a sense of humor…for a saint never takes this world seriously as the lasting city. To him the world is like a scaffoldingup through which souls climb to the kingdom of heaven [or the shoes in which a pilgrim walks], and when the last soul shall have climbed up through it, then it shall be torn down and burned with a fervent fire, not because it is base, but simply because it has done its work – it has brought souls back again to God. A saint is one who looks upon this world as a nursery to the Father’s heavenly mansion and a steppingstone to the kingdom of heaven… A saint is one who never complains about the particular duty of his state in life, for he knows full well that “all the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Why, then, should he who plays the part of a king glory in his tinsel crown and tin sword, and believe that he is better than someone else who plays the part of a peasant, for when the curtain goes down they are all men?… For when the curtain goes down on the last day, and we respond to the curtain call of judgment, we will not be asked what part we played, but how well we played the part that was assigned to us.

Amazing! How humble is our former Pope, to lay down all of the power of office, and take up a different cross, and play that part as well.

Let us all pray for Benedict the Humble!
“He has the intelligence of 12 professors and is as pious as a child on the day of his first communion.” – Cardinal Joachim Meisner

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
V. Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created.
R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
